い-adjective
We are going to learn about one of them, い-adjective.
い-adjective is called "い形容詞(いけいようし)"in Japanese.
"い(i)" is its last syllable when this adjective modifies nouns.
e.g. つぐみこうえんは おおきいこうえんです。
Tsugumikōen wa ōkii koen desu.
Tsugumi Park is a big park.
e.g. おもしろい ほんを よみました。
Omoshiroi hon o yomimashita.
I read an interesting book.
※Adjectives are placed before nouns in Japanese.
"Nは Adj です" describes the state of the noun, or speaker’s impression, opinion or feelings about the noun.
e.g. つぐみこうえんは おおきいです。
Tsugumikōen wa ōkii desu.
Tsugumi Park is big.
e.g. この ほんは おもしろくないです。
Kono hon wa omoshirokunai desu.
This book isn’t interesting.
e.g. きのうは あつかったです。
Kinō wa atsukatta desu.
It was hot yesterday.
e.g. りょこうは たのしくなかったです。
Ryokō wa tanoshikunakatta desu.
The trip wasn't fun.
