In this lesson, you will learn how to use the Japanese grammar ~ています.

A friend messaged you on a messaging app asking if it’s okay to come over right now.
Since you’re currently working on homework that’s due tomorrow, you’d like them to come at 2:00 p.m.
Here’s what you can say in this situation: “今、宿題をしていますから、午後2時に来てください。(いま、しゅくだいをしていますから、ごご2じに きてください。)"

Today let's learn about "~ています".

Verb てform + います

For negative forms, it becomes "Verb てform + いません".

👉<Use>

This pattern indicates that an action is currently in progress.

"宿題をしています" means "I'm working on homework".


⚠The sentence pattern "Verb てform(て形)+います" has several meanings.

 Q:What is Mr. Yamada doing?

 A:He is having lunch.


Negative form

 Q:Are you cleaning your room now?

 A:Yes, I do. / No, I am not.

 Q:Is Ms. Kimura reading a book now?

 A:No, she isn't reading. She is watching TV.
