Sentence+ね。 -Particle ”ね”-
”ね(ne)” is a particle attached to the end of a sentence.
This is used when:
- the speaker seeks the listener’s agreement or confirmation
- shows the speaker’s agreement or sympathy to the listener.
①To seek the listener’s agreement
e.g.(1)
Q:このカレーは おいしいですね。
A:ええ、おいしいですね/そうですね。
Q:Kono karē wa oishī desune.
A:Ē, oishī desune / sō desune.
Q:This curry is delicious, isn’t it?
A:Yes, it is.
e.g.(2)
Q:きょうは とても あついですね。
A:あついですね/そうですね。
Q:Kyō wa totemo atsui desune.
A:Atsui desune / sō desune.
Q:It is so hot today, isn’t it?
A:Yes, it is.
e.g.(3)
Q:きのうは 10じまで はたらきました。
A:たいへんですね。
Q:Kinō wa 10ji made hatarakimashita.
A:Taihen desune.
Q:I worked until 10 yesterday.
A:Oh, that’s tough, isn’t it?
※If you want to express your agreement, you should attach ”ね”at the end of the sentence when you reply, like e.g.(1),(2) above.
②To seek the listener’s confirmation
e.g.
Q:としょかんの やすみは げつようびですね。
A:はい、そうです。
Q:Toshokan no yasumi wa getsuyōbi desune.
A:Hai、sōdesu.
Q:The library is closed on Monday, right?
A:Yes, it is.
e.g.
Q:しけんは 2じから ですね。
A:はい、そうです。
Q:Shiken wa 2ji kara desune.
A:Hai、sōdesu.
Q:The exam will start from 2, right?
A:Yes, it is.
e.g.
Q:あしたの かいぎには きませんね。
A:いいえ、いきます。
Q:Ashita no kaigi ni wa kimasenne.
A:iie, ikimasu.
Q:You are not coming to the meeting tomorrow, right?
A:Yes, I’m coming.
※You shouldn’t attach ”ね” when you respond to these types of sentences.
