Hello and welcome to Nihongoいちにのさん!!
Let's study Japanese grammar together.
な-adjective
adjective: words that give us more information about
people, animals or things represented by nouns and pronouns.
There
are two types of adjectives in Japanese.
We are going to learn about one of them, な-adjective.
な-adjective is called ”な形容詞(なけいようし)" in Japanese.
"な(na)" is its last syllable when this adjective modifies nouns.
Adjectives
are placed before nouns in Japanese.
e.g. キムさんは げんきな がくせいです。
Kimu san wa genkina gakusei desu.
Ms. Kim is a cheerful student.
e.g. しずかな へやで ほんを よみます。
Shizukana heya de hon o yomimasu.
I read books in a quiet room.
Adjectives
are used as predicates and they conjugate just like verbs do.
"Nは Adj です" describes the state of the noun, or speaker’s impression, opinion or feelings about the noun.
e.g. キムさんは げんきです。
Kimu san wa genki desu.
Ms. Kim is cheerful.
e.g. このへやは しずかじゃありません。
Kono heya wa shizukaja arimasen.
This room isn’t quiet.
e.g. おまつりは にぎやかでした。
Omatsuri wa nigiyakadeshita.
The festival was lively.
e.g. ホテルのへやは きれいじゃ ありませんでした。
Hoteru no heya wa kirēja arimasendeshita.
The hotel room wasn't clean.
The conjugation of な-adjective is the same as a noun with 「です(desu)」.
