In this lesson, you will learn how to use the Japanese grammar N1とN2と どちらが いA/なA ですか and Nのほうが いA/なA です.

You’ve invited a friend over. You’d like to have some cake together, but your friend isn’t sure whether they’d prefer coffee or tea. Let’s ask them.
Here’s what you can say in this situation: “コーヒーと紅茶とどちらがいいですか。(コーヒーと こうちゃと どちらがいいですか)。"

Today let's learn about "N1とN2と どちらが いA/なA ですか" and "Nのほうが いA/なA です".

👉<Use>

These patterns, "どちらが" and "のほうが", are used to compare two things and ask or answer which one is more ~.

どちらが

"N1と N2と どちらが いA/なA ですか" is used to ask the listener which is more いA/なA, comparing N1 and N2.

(N=Noun, いA=いadjective, なA=なadjective)

Let’s take a look at the previous example.

In this sentence,“コーヒー” is Noun1 and “紅茶” is Noun2, and the adjective is “いい.”

コーヒーと紅茶とどちらがいいですか。" means "Would you prefer coffee or tea?"

のほうが

Then, how would you answer the question, "コーヒーと紅茶とどちらがいいですか?"
Here’s what you can say: “紅茶のほうがいいです。(こうちゃのほうが いいです)。"

"Nのほうが いA/なA です" is used to answer the question,“N1とN2と どちらが いA/なA ですか.″ If you answer that N1 is more いA/なA, you can say "N1のほうが いA/なA です."

In this sentence, “紅茶” is the noun and the adjective is “いい.”

紅茶のほうがいいです。" means "I'd prefer tea."
