Nが あります(arimasu) ／います(imasu) ②
We have already studied ”あります””います”, which indicates existence.
”あります””います” can also describe to have or to own something.
e.g. （私は）傘が あります。
（わたしは）かさが あります。
I have an umbrella.
e.g. チケットが2枚あります。
チケットが2まいあります。
I have two tickets.
e.g. 今日は時間が ありません。
きょうは じかんが ありません。
I don't have time today.
e.g. 田中さんは娘が2人います。
たなかさんはむすめがふたりいます。
Ms Tanaka has two daughters.
e.g. 私は恋人が いません。
わたしは こいびとが いません。
I don't have a girlfriend.
You can also use “あります” to say what your plans are, such as appointments or work etc...
e.g. 来週の月曜日は約束が あります。
らいしゅうのげつようびはやくそくがあります。
I have an appointment next Monday.
e.g. 今晩は用事が あります。
こんばんはようじがあります。
I have something to do this evening.
e.g. 明日はアルバイトが あります。
あしたはアルバイトがあります。
I have a part-time job tomorrow.
This expression can also indicate that an event will take/ took place.
e.g. 8月に花火大会が あります。
8がつに はなびたいかいが あります。
There is a fireworks festival in August.
e.g. 週末に野球の試合が あります。
しゅうまつに やきゅうの しあいがあります。
A baseball game will be played at the weekend.
e.g. 来月サマーセールが あります。
らいげつサマーセールがあります。
There is a summer sale next month.
e.g. 2年後にオリンピックが あります。
2ねんごにオリンピックがあります。
The Olympic Games will be held in two years.
e.g. 2年前にオリンピックが ありました。
2ねんまえにオリンピックがありました。
The Olympic Games were held two years ago.
If you want to express where the event is taking place, use “で” .
e.g. 8月に京都で花火大会があります。
8がつに きょうとで はなびたいかいが あります。
There is a fireworks festival in Kyoto in August.
e.g. 2年後にフランスでオリンピックがあります。
2ねんごにフランスでオリンピックがあります。
The Olympic Games will be held in France in two years.
