In this lesson, you will learn how to use the Japanese grammar Nounは Nounが い/なAdjective.

Starting this semester, you’ll be attending classes in a new classroom. Your seat is at the back of the room.
But since your eyesight isn’t very good, you’d like to sit in a seat closer to the front.
Let’s ask the teacher.
Here’s what you can say in this situation: “先生、すみません。わたしは目が悪いですから、前の席に座りたいです。(せんせい、すみません。わたしは めが わるいですから、まえのせきに すわりたいです。)"

Today let's learn about "〜は〜が〜です".

👉<Form>

Noun1は Noun2が Adjectivです

👉<Use>

There are two different types of this sentence pattern.

①N2:A part or a certain aspect

This sentence pattern describes that N1 has a characteristic that ”N2 が い/なA.“
N2 is a part of or a certain aspect of N1.
The adjective indicates a characteristic or state of N2.

"わたしは目が悪いです" means "I have poor eyesight."

N1=わたし N2=目

"目" is a part of "I" and "悪いです" is the state of "目".

(“先生、すみません。わたしは目が悪いですから、前の席に座りたいです。" means "Excuse me, teacher. I have poor eyesight, so I’d like to sit in the front row.")

②N2:The object of the predicate

It is also used when N2 is the object of the predicate adjective.
We have previously studied "好き(すき)", "嫌い(きらい)" and "欲しい(ほしい)"
In this article, we are going to study examples of the other adjectives "上手(じょうず)" and "下手(へた)".

Let's see an example.

Ms. Kimura is good at drawing.

N1=木村さん N2=絵

"絵" is the object of "上手です".

“上手(じょうず)” means“good”and "下手(へた)" means“bad.”

The word“上手”is rarely used when referring to oneself, as it can sound like bragging.
Similarly, “悪い”is rarely used when referring to others, as it can be considered rude.
